5. The Holiday (2006)

Coming in at number 5, we have a Christmas movie that feels like it has kind of gone under the radar when it comes to these types of discussions, but to us, it still has a special part in our hearts. Not only is there Jude Law making every watcher swoon in some way or another, be it either with jealousy or with love, but Jack Black gives really touching, romantic moments to an otherwise comedic character. The soundtrack, feel and setting is very 2000’s, making it together with Love Actually one of the most important christmas movies of the time and still stand as a trademark example of a feel good christmas movie.

4. Home Alone (1990)

The story of Kevin McCallister, a young boy that accidentally gets left behind when his family goes on vacation for Christmas, is a seasonal classic for almost every family. The film is a perfect blend of heartwarming moments and hilarious slapstick comedy as Kevin defends his home from burglars using inventive booby traps. Macaulay Culkin delivers a memorable performance, further sweetened by his well deserved star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. "Home Alone" captures the spirit of Christmas with a mix of laughter and sentimentality and is for us a classic that deserves the number 4 spot.

3. The Holdovers (2023)

Entering our top 3, we have something other than a timeless classic. In this Christmas film set in Barton Academy boarding school in the early '70s, Paul Giamatti delivers a standout performance as Mr. Hunham, a teacher disliking entitled students. Directed by Alexander Payne, the movie skillfully balances comedy and serious themes, with Dominic Sessa's portrayal of Agnus Tully adding depth. The characters, facing unexpected Christmas on campus, confront pivotal moments that lead to transformative journeys and self-determined choices. The film's nuanced narrative emphasizes personal growth and connections, causing it not to be the most wholesome movie to watch on Christmas, but it does make you think twice about how other people might be celebrating this not always warm holiday. 2. Gremlins (1984)

Now for a personal one. "Gremlins" is a unique blend of horror and comedy set against the backdrop of Christmas. The story begins when a young man receives a mysterious creature called a Mogwai as a Christmas gift, along with three important rules. However, when these rules are broken, chaos ensues as the cute Mogwai multiplies into mischievous and destructive creatures. The film successfully balances dark humor with holiday charm, creating a one-of-a-kind Christmas movie that stands out from the traditional fare. Next to the nice balance of warm moments with Gizmo and the terrifying moments with the Gremlins, there’s also the interesting theme of not messing with mother nature, which is sadly still much needed. "Gremlins" is a fun and unconventional choice for those looking to add a touch of the bizarre to their holidays, the unique take on the genre earns it a (biased: well deserved) second spot.

1. How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000)

Growing up, Jim Carrey was an inspirational force every Christmas, giving a soul to a pure soulless creature. There wasn’t a single 25th of December that came along without having watched this movie at least once. The film explores the story of the Grinch, a green recluse who despises the festive cheer of Whoville and decides to steal Christmas from the unsuspecting Whos. While the film takes creative liberties with the source material, it successfully captures the whimsical and heartwarming essence of Dr. Seuss's original story. "How The Grinch Stole Christmas" is visually vibrant and celebrates the true meaning of Christmas spirit. To me personally, it shows most of all that nobody should be alone at christmas, "No matter how different a Who may appear, he will always be welcomed with holiday cheer."
